In Case of Emergency

Came across this via Robin Blandford’s blog bytesurgery.com/gearedup.
There’s a campaign moving through Europe to encourage people to store an emergency contact number, such as that of a close friend or family member, under the heading ICE (In Case of Emergency). Seemingly this was started as a nationwide campaign in the UK (it’s the first I heard of it anyway) and it allows paramedics or police to be able to contact a designated friend/relative should the worst come to worst.
According to Robin the idea is “the brainchild of East Anglian Ambulance Service Paramedic Bob Brotchie … a paramedic for 13 years” who often had to search through the mobile phones of shocked or injured people looking for a relative to contact.
Sounds like a good idea to me and sounds like something worth spreading about!! Though if you are like me, with a friend called “Ice”, it might be no harm to put the full name into your phone “ICE – In Case of Emergency”
Good post Robin.

  1. But wouldn’t that be covered by having your home number saved in your phone? Or a close family member’s?

On another note, cheers for drawing attention to the BBC magazine article.

  2. I suppose it would, but I guess the point of this is that it provides them with an immediate number to call without having to search through a pile of names.

No prob on the link, you got great advertising there. Get the adsense ads on there quick!

  3. It might be difficult for an ambulance crew in South Central LA. Imagine a gangsta being shot in a drive-by and the crew going through his mobile looking for a number. There could be a dozen shams called “Ice” in that address book. :-)

  4. “Seemingly this was started as a nationwide campaign in the UK (it’s the first I heard of it anyway)”

it was started by Sussex ambulance service and gained widespread recognition following the 7/7 bombs.

  5. Thanks for the link Beano!

  6. I have a couple of friends already plugged into my cell phone ICE Cube ICE T and ICE Cream….. tends to get a tad confusing

  7. If you live in Finland, you gotta bet you should make sure ICE is your friend boom boom.

Joking aside, this is a good tip which I have heard several times before without doing anything about it.

I have just done it. You may have saved my life, bro.

Don’t give up the day job JLP :)

Well, as mentioned perhaps ICE isn’t the best to use but the idea is sound IMO.
