Slugger O’Toole have a new Irish language blogger, Cathal O Foirreidh. Mick had previously mentioned to me that perhaps I could contribute some Irish posts to Slugger [since I spend so much time there anyway] but with my remedial Irish there was never a chance, so I’m delighted to see Cathal taking this role. If all his posts are as good as his first then we’re in for a treat.
New Irish blogger for Slugger

I don’t what I’d give to be able to read and write in this wonderful language!
Antonio — my recommendation is to marry an Irish-language teacher and live in fear that your children will speak a language you don’t understand.
That’s been enough for me to learn it (at least at the grammar-school level I’m at now…)
Nicole, is that an advice or a punishment?
Anyway I can’t follow any of those, I’m married already.
All I can do is studying harder and practising it on the spot
If you’re interested in learning there are lots of resources available on the internet. You could learn some basics and see if you like it.
Alternatively get a divorce and follow Nicole’s advice
Maca, I got hold of an Irish grammar book some years ago and I bought some dictionary during some of my several trips to Ireland. But without a good teacher they’re almost no use
I already have some good links in my bookmarks
Without a teacher you’d need some tapes or CD’s so you could listen to it.
There is a book called Progress in Irish which is good but might be difficult for you. You can get the answers for this here:
http://www.gaeilge.org/PII-ak.html
http://members.aol.com/madoyleme/irishindex.html
And matching MP3 files here:
http://www.philo-celtic.com/PII/Progress.htm
You can also get lessons online from here:
http://www.gaeltalk.net/index1.html
Thanks Maca, I saved the links above.
The MP3 files are a little low in volume, need to have good ears
I’ll check them more thoroughly later.
Antonio — there’s a list (just started) for those who want to learn via Teach Yourself Irish (the older edition, written by Dillon and O Croinin — not the new edition). If you can get a copy of the book, there are mp3s that we’ll be putting up for each lesson.
The list is at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TYIMunster/
Let me know if you have any questions…
Nicole, I serched the web but it seems that the older edition of this book is quite unavailable. There’s a used copy in Texas at $28…
About the mailing list I’ll think it over. Before subscribing I think I should be more motivated and prepared, trained.
Thanks Nicole, Thanks Maca, for all your infos!!!
Antonio — please see the dealers on http://www.abebooks.com; there are books in the UK for as little as $1. (Search for Author: Dillon and Title: Teach Yourself Irish.)
If you were interested in learning the Munster dialect, it’s the best course for it.
Nicole,
I looked into that link and I think I found it.
There are several edition as old as 1961. Is this the one to buy?
Thanks a lot!!!!!
The 1961 edition is the one to buy! Hope you join us…
Thank you, Cionaodh!!!
I’ll click the link in the next days
