Top 10 U2 Oldies

Found myself listening to a whole lotta U2 this week, especially the old stuff, brings back memories. So I decided to create a Top 10 … with a difference …

Top 10 U2 pre-Joshua Tree lesser known toons which make you say “jaysus, remember dat? I haven’t heard dat in ages!”

Here would be my Top 10:

1. 40/War 1983
2. Gloria/October 1981
3.Surrender/War 1983
4. Shadows & Tall Trees/Boy 1980
5. Two Hearts Beat as One/War 1983
6. Seconds/War 1983
7. An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart/Boy 1980
8. I Fall Down/October 1981
9. Twilight/Boy 1980
10. With a Shout /October 1981

Chosen from Boy, October, War, The Unforgettable Fire plus Under A Blood Red Sky & Wide Awake in America.

Just missed the cut…
Drowning Man/War
Tomorrow/October
October/October
Like A Song/War
Rejoice/October

Don’t whinge about the exclusion of tracks like Sunday Bloody Sunday, Bad or New Year’s Day … they are not “lesser known”.

p.s. here’s a good place to download some very cheap songs.

  1. Nice choices, and all from pre-shite-era U2. Maith thú!

  2. The opening riff of “Out of Control” (Track1, Side 1* from “Boy”) probably defined their sound for almost all of the ’80s.

    *showin’ me age there ;-)

  3. I’ve got a demo version of “Out of Control” from before they cut “Boy”, and they sound like a bunch of whacked-out punks on speed. The “Boy” version is downright mild by comparison.

I don’t think I ever had that much energy, even when I was that young (I think they were in their late teens at the time they recorded “Boy”).

    :-(

  4. But what about Sunday Bloody Sunday?

    I joke! I joke!

  5. What about Sunday Bloody Sunday?

Alan Partridge’s timeless quote about the U2 classic:

Fantastic. ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’. What a great song. It really
encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday, doesn’t it? You wake up in the morning, you’ve got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running round, you’ve got to mow the lawn, wash the car, and you think “Sunday, bloody Sunday!”

  6. A Chionaoidh (is that right in the vocative?),
I take it you lost interest in U2 post-Joshua Tree? I think they lost a lot of fans during the Achtung Baby/Pop/Zooropa period. Zooropa was a very weak album but I think there’s still something on every album which I like.

    Gerry
Been listening to Boy again this morning. Very strong album esp for a debut, great stuff.

Swearing Lady … you JOKE about U2? HEATHEN ! :)

  7. A Mhaca,

That’s about the size of it. I think by the time they did the Rattle & Hum movie & record they were no longer about quality. Way too much ego and too little content.

  8. That’s quite true. Though their latest 2 albums have shown some promise, IMO, less ego more good rock.

  9. I would have added the actual song “The Unforgettable Fire” as well, otherwise a great list and a good idea to compile it.
