On your own time … for your own sake

It constantly amazes me how many people use their company email to send personal mails without at the very least removing their contact details from their signatures.
I’ve heard of people in the past being suspended or even losing their jobs due to ‘mis-use’ of their company’s mail system.

In the past couple of weeks for example I have received, in forwarded jokes, the full contact details for people working in companies such as the Bank of Ireland (multiple branches), Tesco Ireland, Deloitte & Touche, Hewlett-Packard, Goodbody Stockbrokers, Barclays and about a dozen smaller firms throughout Ireland. Are none of these people concerned at all that their mails might come full circle and be seen by someone else in the company potentially landing them in a spot of bother? I’d be concerned.

  1. These are stupid people. I have many e-mail accounts but sometimes I happen to use the company account for personal messages. I always the signature with all the informations, phone number included.
Anyway, at least over here in Italy, the employers cannot fire their employees for this action. They can give them a warning, but they cannot be fired. Our law is clear on this topic.

  2. It’s good you have some protection but of course it’s best to avoid getting into trouble in the first place :)
