The meaning of me

Just got an interesting (to me) email a short while ago. I hope the young lady in question doesn’t mind me posting it here.

The email:

Twenty three yrs ago, the first clear word out of my two yr old grandaughter mouth, was “Maca”, as she looked at me. I’m still trying to find the origin/meaning of the word. As a well known folk singer years ago, I was particularly drawn by the Irish/scottish celtic, The histories, bairds, poets and old music. Over twenty three years I’ve sung these songs to four Grandkids. Can you give me some info? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks, from a **/**/** bloodline, without an ounce of Gaelic blood from anywhere down the line. I think that it’s Magik.

Sincerely,
XY

My reply:

Hello X

Thanks for your interesting email. I have no idea where “maca” comes from or if it means anything … I use it because it’s the beginning of my surname in Irish, MacAonghusa.

The word “mac” is an Irish (Gaelic) word meaning “son”, so my surname MacAonghusa means “son of Aonghus”.

“Maca” is also a root from Peru which is used to increase sperm count, and sexual desire . Not that I know much about that you understand!! Ahem. Anyway …

So apart from the Peruvian libido enhancing root and my internet handle I doubt it means much. A search on etymonline.com and dictionary.com yielded nothing and a search on Wikipedia brings us back to the root … which I don’t need, I tell ya!!

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help!
maca

Ok, maybe it doesn’t interest you but I’m at a loose end tonight so tough!
If you’ve ever heard the term “maca” before please feel free to enlighten us and help XY solve this 23 year old puzzle. GRMA!

Should fireworks be legalised?

Fireworks are annoying. Few will disagree. Kids in this estate have been wrecking our heads for months with bangers and rockets. They have been used at times to terrorise older people, and they are dangerous; we’ve all heard the horror stories. So why legalise them? Wouldn’t that just make it worse? Answers: Safety, and no I don’t think so.

Fireworks have been illegal for decades yet it doesn’t prevent people getting hold of them. I can just nip into town now and get a packet of Black Cats if I want. Punishments might be more severe now but I don’t think that will really do much to deter anyone from buying them. Legal or illegal they will always be there and will always be annoying.

Why I would like to see them legalised is on grounds of safety. Do you know what safety guidelines a Fire Officer might issue concerning fireworks? None. Because he can’t. He can’t tell you how to use them safely, he can’t tell you what types are particularly dangerous and he can’t tell you how to take safety precautions when you want to use them. He can’t because they are illegal.
Surely if we are so worried about kids getting injured at Halloween then we need to issue proper safety guidelines other than just ‘don’t use them’; and more than that we need to control what sort of fireworks are actually being sold so we could weed out the particularly hazardous ones or those of inferior quality.

Legalising fireworks would allow us to better control what fireworks reach the market and how they are used. We could put the necessary legislation in place so that only licensed importers could actually import the fireworks, that only an approved range of fireworks (of regulated quality) are imported and that only licensed retailers could sell them. We could set age limits for purchase of fireworks and importantly we could issue all the safety guidelines necessary to properly educate people about the dos and don’ts of fireworks usage.
We could still crack down on those selling illegal fireworks but their business would quickly dry up if we could all just buy our fireworks from a licensed retailer. Plus, in the case of accidents we would now be able to prosecute people for mis-use of fireworks, the retailer for selling to minors or the adult for casually passing bangers to a child.

Fireworks will always be dangerous and annoying but I’ll bet you we’ll see far less kids losing fingers if we are allowed to teach people how to use them safely. Dat’d be my opinion anywayz.

Road deaths … what to do, what to do

We’ve just had another bloody weekend … so we ask the same questions we asked last time … “what can we do to cut down on the number of deaths on our roads?” “how can we get people to slow down?”. Give it a week and it’s all forgotten, till the next bloody weekend when we ask the same questions again.

I’ll tell you what can be done. Enforce the fucking rules!! That might not be a bad place to start. Start checking for speed on … wait for it … roads where accidents actually happen, not on roads where it’s just easy to make some dosh. Or how about doing random breath tests in every town every weekend night … never thought of that one? This wrecks my head sometimes, I have to be honest.

Rather than rant on, which I’d love to do, here’s a few constructive thoughts on what I think could/should be done.

Speed & Breath Checks

• Speed checks!!! (I drove for over 3 hours today and didn’t see a single speed check, saw plenty of speeding cars though)
          - Permanent speed checks on all main roads, all dangerous roads or roads where accidents have occurred
• Random breath testing every night (esp weekend) in every town in Ireland

Citizens Action

• Encourage members of the public to spill the beans on people who drink and drive, drive recklessly or drive illegally
• Encourage members of the public to continually blast their horns at people driving recklessly, breaking speed limits or over taking at dangerous speeds
• Encourage parents to educate their kids about driving dangers or to make their kids get proper driving lessons
• Encourage people to leave the car at home when they go out, to always nominate a designated driver or to find alternative modes of transport

Our Roads

• Review of speed limits especially on narrow or winding roads
• More improvements to our roads to improve space & visibility for example.
• Better road signs/markings for dangerous stretches of roads.

Offenders

• Stricter sentencing for offenders (heavier driving bans)
• Offenders required to undergo re-training & re-testing after their driving bans
• Previous offenders car type restricted based on weight to power ratio
• Community service schemes for offenders … let them see first hand what alcohol can do to a person, or the sort of physiotherapy some crash victims may have to go through

New Drivers

• Graduated points system … new drivers should have half points for a certain period of time
• Either do away with or totally overhaul our provisional licence system. A learner licence should be for learning only. Failing your test should put you off the road until you can pass it
• Mandatory driving course from qualified instructors, not learning from your da down the back roads (like I did, before I got proper lessons)
• No car insurance unless you can provide proof of having undergone a minimum number of driving lessons and perhaps some sort of certificate of competency from the driving school (prior to doing the test)
• Education on road safety in schools. If it requires it, show kids what happens to the human body when someone is killed at speed. Show them driving may be fun but driving recklessly can kill.

Cars

• Car type for new drivers restricted based on power-to-weight ratio and all horsepower modifications banned.
• Beepers to be fitted on all cars (ever hear those annoying beppers on some cars … where you go over the limit and the beepers emit this really annoying beep until you slow down?)
• Speed limiters on cars

They’re just some suggestions, nothing new really. Of course all of these things are well and good but what’s really needed is a change in attitude from Irish drivers. Not only do we need to slow down and drive more carefully but we should no longer tolerate other drivers who put us and our families at risk.

Update: Cllr Damien Blake (a FF’er, but no-ones perfect) is running a “Stop The Carnage” campaign on his blog. A lot of other bloggers have gotten on board too.

Seoige & O’Shea

Just happened to be watching Seoige & O’Shea today, while relaxing after a late lunch. They had a brief discussion on the Irish language and one of the guests was one Paul MacDonnell from the Open Republic Institute who should be no stranger to those with any knowledge of the political side of the Irish language movement. Apart from his trousers being too short I thought he came off sounding like someone with a chip on his shoulder. It was quite funny to watch.

Anyway this post isn’t about him. One of the issues they very very briefly mentioned was whether or not someone is more Irish if they speak the language. I was very disappointed that they didn’t actually explore this point because it should be stated clearly that Irish people who speak Polish as their first language, mar shampla, are just as Irish as someone from Corca Duibhne who speak an Ghaeilge as their first language. It’s not that they insinuated otherwise on S & O’S it’s just that they didn’t discuss the issue at all after briefly mentioning it.

Also, it got me to wondering. I have never heard (or read) an Irish speaker tell someone they are less Irish because they don’t speak the language. So where does this come from? Is it simply English speaker’s perception or are they assuming this is what an Irish speaker thinks? None of this was covered properly on the program today. I wouldn’t be gone on Seoige & O’Shea to be honest.

How’d you find me?

This is something I haven’t bothered to check before … search terms people used when they found my blog. Here’s some good ones from just the last 100 or so searches:

“funny chinese names” – an amazing amount of people are searching for funny chinese names. Cén fáth?

“yorkshire hijab” – eh?

“most hated people in dewsbury west yorkshire” – someone’s in for it!

“thailand rescue robot joystick ” – WTF??

Internet Exploder

Is it worth mentioning that IE7 has been officially released? Worth mentioning perhaps but not worth linking to so I won’t. I have been using IE7 Beta 2 for months … wait … what am I saying?!? … I’ve had it installed for months but have only used it to test it out *phew*. I posted a quick review a while back. I’m not even going to download the updated version [and believe me downloading software updates is like a fetish for me] but will wait until it’s included in the XP update next month.

Speaking of browsers, I haven’t installed any new browser since K-Meleon and Flock months ago. It must be time to find some new obscure browser to play with, maybe some little known Firefox clone.

Update: According to /. less that 24 hrs after IE7 has been released the first vulnerability has been discovered!

Firefox party in Dublin

Anyone heading to (or even know about) the Firefox 2 launch party in Dublin next month? It’s being organised by a company called Segala and is provisionally booked for the 14th November in the Dakota bar on South William Street (not far from St.Stephen’s Green). Free drinks they claim! Very tempting!

Slip sliding away (FIFA rankings)

Just noticed this morning that Ireland (i.e. Rep.Ireland) have slid further down the FIFA rankings to #49 with N.Ireland leap frogging us to bring them to #45. We have been sliding for a while now but recent results have really let us down.
Hopefully our decent is over (as of last weeks draw) and we can put together a string of good results to move us further up the table where we belong. Fair dues to NI who have been rocketing up the rankings list since Sanchez took over. There’s a team Stan & the lads should be watching. Why? Because they don’t have has many good players as we do yet they play very well as a team and have managed to get some fantastic results recently. If we played as well as a team and put in as much effort as they do we wouldn’t be in the position we are in now.
Of course the FIFA rankings are far from being an accurate measure of how good a team really is. Still it’s the only official list we really have, so it would be nice to be in the top 20.

Edit: The ranking change was also mentioned by Slugger where one of the sluggerettes posted about the World Football ELO Ratings which attempt to give a more accurate ranking list.

Web rage in the UK

Interesting case this. A man in the UK has been found guilty of what appears to be the UK’s first incident of web rage. Apparently two guys got into an argument on a chat room and traded insults. Once of the men then tracked down the other, drove to his house in Essex and beat him up with an axe handle!
Let that be a warning to you! If you’re going to insult anyone online make sure he can’t get your personal details!

Sinn Féin visit

Some Sinn Féiners called ’round to the house the other night. I was expecting some of the parties to start calling soon and SF were among those I was going to yell “feck off!” at. But damn them to hell they were so damn nice that I couldn’t but listen to what they had to say. SF have had accussations of intimidation thrown at them not so long ago but the SF reps who called around here were nothing but nice and polite. They still won’t get my vote though. I don’t know who will, they’re all cunts!

My name it is ma-ca an’ I hate you, one and all.
An’ I hate you, one and all:
Damn your eyes!
