Personal .ie domains

With my head buried in the sand these past few months I totally missed the change in .ie registration rules … as of 31st October 2007 you can now register personal .ie domain names! Certain restrictions apply of course but it’s a welcome and long overdue rule change.

For cheapest registration prices, that i found so far, head on over to LetsHost.ie, Register365.com or Blacknight.ie.

“Irish” International “University”

A BBC London investigation has uncovered a scam by a group calling itself the “Irish International University” (iiuedu.ie). It has been operating in the UK for a number of years, targeting foreign students and at one stage claimed to have a campus in Dublin.

The Malaysian group, registered as a business in Switzerland, which apparently has 5000 students worldwide and thousands of graduates have been offering worthless degrees to students who have been led to believe this “university” is an approved accredited institution.

The Department of Education here is certainly aware of this crowd, having being contacted during the BBC’s investigations, and as far as I know the Irish Government have requested that the Malaysian Government shut this group down. As their website is still up and running you have to assume there are some students out there still being conned out of their hard earned cash.

Cunts. I really hate scammers.

The moral of the story, prospective foreign students, is double and triple check the credentials of any such institution before handing over your cash! Don’t be conned by false titles and fancy website photos!

Hpy XMas & Grt New Yr

I’m jetting off tomorrow morning for the snowy climes of Finland. Last year Santy let me down badly so this year I’ll be only a short drive from his gaff and will poison all his reindeers if he doesn’t bring me what I want!!

Tomorrow night I’ll be meeting up with a bunch of expats and we intend to tear the absolute arse out of; what better way to get the holidays started! I’ll be off line for the rest of the holliers and hope to be back in business the first weekend in January.

In the mean time I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, hope you and your family have a pleasant holiday. Most of all stay safe and we’ll see you next year!

Ish our chrishmas party tonite…

… so in a few hours I shall hopefully be locked, hammered, buckled, in bits, wrecked, fluttered, plastered and maybe even somewhat inebriated! Considering it’s actually months since I was out for a few drinks I don’t think it’ll take much to do me in.

If I’m in a half decent state tomorrow i’ll respond to your posts, which i should have done earlier, sorry. Till then … adieu *hic*

TV Licencing

From Citizens Information: “Every household, business or institution in Ireland with a television or equipment capable of receiving a television signal (using an aerial, satellite dish, cable or other means) must have a television licence”.

The funding from TV licences is used to support RTÉ 1, RTE 2, Radio 1, RnaG, TG4, Lyric FM & Performing groups.

Dare-4:

A question: If you own a TV but don’t watch TV on it but instead only use it for gaming why do you still need to pay for the service you’re not being provided with?

Another question: If you own a TV enabled mobile phone or a PC with an internet connection on which you can also watch TV or listen to radio you don’t need a TV licence (assuming you don’t have a TV). Why not?

Yet another question: Why isn’t there a radio licence?

Just curious like…

Did you know: in the UK, probably here too, you can get a free TV licence if you are blind. How fucking cheeky is that!?!

Melting ice caps and all that stuff

Would you believe with all this talk over the years and especially in recent times about the Greenhouse effect, climate change, melting ice caps and all that stuff I have never given it even a minutes thought.

“After all who will suffer?” thought I (note: that thought only took 4 seconds), “a few fucking polar bears?” (a further 3 seconds) “like those fuckers on Lost”. “How the fuck did polar bears end up on that island anyway? … the Hydra? WTF?” … mind wanders and so ends any thoughts I have had on that particular issue.

But I decided to actually give it more thought and the first thing I considered was what would happen if the ice melted i.e. would the water levels rise? Surely if the ice is floating then the melting ice won’t make a bit of difference to the sea levels. Ya think the way some people were talking we’d have to move to the top of Carrantuohill to avoid flooding.
But IS the ice floating or is there something under the ice?

The following are the most common suggestions as to what could be under the ice; either supporting the ice i.e. land, or just something generally half interesting:

1. body infesting chest exploding spider alien babies. Hopefully! You never know!
2. Saddam’s nukes, well they ain’t in Iraq.
3. green land … wouldn’t that be a surprise? “No there fucking isn’t!” says the ghosts of the ancient Scandinavian settlers who had the misfortune of trying to grow spuds in the snow. “Green land my hole!”
4. “Time bomb ticks under ice” according the Oakland Tribune … now I find that highly unlikely. A time bomb? Seriously? Talk about far fetched!
5. land … like in 3 above though probably not green
6. already melted ice

As plausible as all those suggestions are (bar no.4) only two are close, 5 or 6 depending on which ice pack your talking about.
The north pole is covered by a floating ice pack … floating i.e. no land underneath. So beneath it is nothing but a pile of very cold fish, crabs and other swimmers and crawlers.

As for the Greenland ice sheet … according to Ohio State Uni “our dream is to create this new image of what Greenland would look like, were the ice sheets stripped away.” So they invented the Global Ice Sheet Mapping Orbiter (GISMO … oh people, FFS c’mon!!) and their resulting scan below shows that the land is all multicoloured and covered in streaky features:

Of course if the ice would just fucking melt already we’d know for sure!

So what does this mean for future? On the downside a rise in waters is likely cos of the Greenland ice caps which is bad news for some but there’s SFA we can do about it at this stage anyway so fuck John Gormley and his carbon efficiency car tax hike bullshit, it’ll make no difference whatsoever … but on the positive we’ll have a new multicoloured land for care bears to live on and procreate in peace. Hooray!

p.s. yeah I know there’s more ice at the bottom of the planet, but that will drip down if it melts … obviously, gravity!! Hello!?!

Ah, push it – push it real good

Here’s a mobile application worth trying out … emoze
A PUSH email solution for everyone!

One of the things I missed a lot when I switched from an i-mode Sony Ericsson back to a Nokia was the lack of push email. That problem is now solved thanks to emoze. It’s free and it works with outlook, lotus and Gmail! Ooh babay babay, b-b-ba-babay. Ok … sorry … got that feckin’ tune stuck in my mind now.

Anyway I wouldn’t foist this on you unless I had tested it … I have and it works pretty good! On the two email tests I did both mails arrived within 1 minute.
I did have quite a few issues getting it working at the beginning and occasionally it didn’t seem to fully connect even after waiting for ages plus in general it can be very slow to start up but you hardly need to start it too often anyway.
The file you’ll need to install is over 1Mb so I recommend downloading it to your PC … unless you’re like some people and have unlimited downloads for a ridiculously low monthly fee!
Even despite the few negatives there it might prove itself to be a useful little app.

Fifa to discuss Irish player row

The football folks north of the border still aren’t accepting the FIFA ruling that players born in Northern Ireland can turn out for the Republic. The Unionists even wanted to pass a motion in Stormont condemming FIFA’s proposal! *yawn*

Why can’t an Irish citizen born in the North play for their national team?
Was Maik Taylor (NI keeper) born in Northern Ireland? Actually, what link does he have with Northern Ireland anyway? He was born in Germany, his mother is German and father is English! The IFA being fucking hypocrits in my opinion.

Give the players some respect, if they choose to play for their national team be it NI or ROI respect their decision and leave well enough alone. You shouldn’t deny players the chance to play for their national team which is what will happen if the IFA manage to reverse this proposal.

Since the IFA isn’t happy with it perhaps they should tackle it another way, by encouraging lads to turn out for the North rather than denying them the chance to play for the Republic.

Edit: I should point out that this was a test of a mobile app called Shozu and the only picture I had available was of the weighing scales in our jacks. Don’t ask.

Anyway, nice app Shozu, but you can only post pictures or videos so hardly something I’ll use too often considering the rates O2 charge for data transfer. Daylight robbery I tells ya!

Mobile GMaps

This is definitely one to check out …

Mobile GMaps is a FREE application that displays maps from Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps, Windows Live Local (MSN Virtual Earth), Ask.com, Open Street Map and other sources on Java J2ME-enabled mobile phones, PDAs and other devices. MGMaps can connect to a GPS receiver over bluetooth or use internal GPS features on some phones in order to automatically display the map for your current position. You can pre-download maps and store them on your memory card in order to use them on the go without accessing the internet.

The problem I had with Google Maps on the aul mobile was the bloody cost (& speed) of downloading maps … hey presto Mobile GMaps!! Now I can download a truck load of maps to the PC and transfer to the mobile! Brilliant!

I’m downloading and installing as we speak but it’s a slow process. Will post an update if ne1 is interested.
