09/17/2004: "EU launches crisis police force"

Five EU countries have launched a new European Police Force called The European Gendarmerie Force (EGF) which will be based in Vicenza, Italy.

"The force will initially involve France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands, but will be open to others in the future."
"It is earmarked for post-conflict peacekeeping, maintaining public order and other policing duties."

Sounds interesting. Next up is probably an EU Defence Force, which has been discussed and also proposed. Many feel Europe should be able to defend herself without US assisstance. [Defence: Atlantic or European? 1 December, 2003]
