03/04/2005: "US Casualties top 1500"
The war in Iraq is certainly taking it's toll. Latest figures show 1502 US troops killed in Iraq so far, with approximatly 11,000 wounded, half of them being able to return to duty. Sustainable by military standards, how about politically?
In A poll a year ago 23% of Americans believed that the war in Iraq was a mistake. Now that figure is 47%!

And then US forces almost kill the Italian journalist who was just released:

What's interesting is that Italian Secret Service agents were with her. And that they were speeding towards the US checkpoint that shot at them. It's not mentioned in the story above, but Reuters had said that earlier. I wonder where the blame will lie, with the Italians for driving too fast at a US checkpoint or with the poor grunts on at the checkpoint.
Plus, will this make Italy pull out of Iraq?

It's hard to know who to blame, the trigger happy American troops or the ISS agents who should have had more sense than to drive at speed towards a US checkpoint. Some are saying the attack was deliberate, such talk itself is enough to raise Italian tensions over the war.
Anyway, the funeral for the agent is on today.
